CREATION.
When I first started scratching into my first piece of film I didn't know what to scratch into the film. I actually made a mess of it and basically gave up. But after getting a new piece of film I started to think of opposites and negatives, first thing I tried was Hello and Bye, I also wanted to show some motion in the film so i tried making a line flow and morph into the word bye.
When scratching into film it is very hard to get detail, the film is so small you can barely draw on it perfectly.
After scratching into the film I recorded them and threw them into After Effects. First thing I did was mix them up and add some effects on top of each other.

I threw a lot of different effects onto my animation, some turned out really nicely and some were okay but weren't what I wanted.
After messing around with the scratched film, I then started to create my metamorphosis animation. I started to sketch out my ideas and came up with Negative and Positive storyline.

It was very easy to create a metamorphosis animation in After Effects. The first thing I did was create a white background, I will be creating the shape in black.
I then start to use the mask shape tool to create the shape that I want, because I am not the best drawer I used reference images to draw around, for example I drew around the gun to create that perfect outline.
After drawing the shape you wanted you need to keyframe the 'Path' on the shape layer, move a few second later then create the next shape you want using the same mask points as the first shape. When playing back through the animation you will see each mask path move into the new position that you set them at.

I was planning on drawing each frame of this animation for a real film, but when I tried to draw this onto a transparent film it was too small and I couldn't use a small enough pen to get the detail. I ended up scrapping that Idea and tried to create a fake film projector version of this animation.
I used two effects on the comp to try and create a film projector. I used an effect called Uni.carousel which gave that film looking effect and I also used a Film Damage effect. When you see scratches and hairs on a film this is exactly what the effect does.
