zine research.
A zine is made by an unprofessional writer, that tells a story about a specific subject. A zine is a self-published magazine or short for Fanzine.
A zine is often made cheaply and printed cheaply, most zines are made in black and white and mass produced with a photocopier and put together using a stapler.
Most zines were made around the music scene but other people have created zines that have been dedicated to artwork, poetry, cartoons, editorials and short stories. Zines were mostly motivated by a desire for self-expression, not for profit.

After looking at a lot of other zines, I have decided to keep my zine very simple and clean, I want to produce a zine where it is easy for the reader to understand. A lot of zines are created in black and white so I want to turn a lot of the photos that I have taken into black and white, but personally I think black and white is a bit too boring and basic so I might add just one colour to everything.
I also really like the use of just using one page and on the page next to it use a single colour. It gives it a very clean look and it draws the reader into the page with the design/photo.

Another unique style I found was instead of just having a normal rectangle page, I could always cut out and shape the page how I want it. In this instance because I am doing Buildings of Hastings, I may cut around the building and use the solo colour page as a background to the cut out building.
I also checkout the different variations that you can make a Zine, I looked at different ways of cutting a large sheet of paper (A3/A2 paper). Also ways of folding a piece of paper to turn it from a 2 sided page to many different pages. After trying out different methods, personally I might either stay with the main variation where you cut the middle part and it folds into an 8-page zine. Or do an assembling method where you just put pieces of paper on top of each other.

THE MEMPHIS GROUP
Is an Italian design and architecture group that was founded in Milan by Ettore Sottsass in 1981. They design Postmodern furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass and metal object from 1981 to 1987.
They drew inspiration from such movements as Art Deco and Pop Art, including styles such as the 1950s Kitsch and futuristic themes.
Art Deco -
Art Deco, also called style moderne, was a movement in the decorative arts and architecture that originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style in western Europe and the United States during the 1930s. Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric forms of Cubism; the bright colours of Fauvism.
Pop Art -
Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the mid-1950s in Britain and the late 1950s in the United States. Artists that shaped the pop art movement were Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton in Britain, and Larry Rivers, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns among others in the United States.
Pop Art was the art of popular culture. It was the visual art movement that characterised a sense of optimism during the post war consumer boom of the 1950's and the 1960's. It coincided with the globalization of pop music and youth culture, personified by Elvis and the Beatles.

Memphis group has created some very colourful pieces of work, a lot of their work is very influenced by Cubism. From their chair designs to their Building designs, they are all very similar to each other; simple with very plain colours. I am more interesting in the patterns they have designed. A lot of the 80's patterns are what inspired me to do an 80's themed Zine and Animation for the 'Buildings of Hastings'.

What I love the most about this Zine is how a lot of the images are masked and have a colour or another image placed behind it. Cutting around a person or an object gives you more room on the page. For example the lady with the arm up, they masked around her and put a green star behind her, if they kept the normal photo and put the star to the side of it, the pictures would have shown a different effect.
It all merges together to create one image and thats what I will be trying to do with my Zine. I want to mask around a lot of the buildings to remove the sky, people or other buildings and add an 80s themed pattern behind it.
Same with the animation for 'Buildings in Hastings', I want to mask around all of the buildings and create a new sky or background for the building. Instead of having a still pattern I want to animate the patterns to give the video more movement and life to it.
